ABSTRACT The increase in the complexity inherent to public administrative activities, including public procurement, has led ANO to develop a public e-procurement platform in order for Portuguese public entities to perform their contracts and acquisitions. Given the introduction of European PEPPOL standards and the requirement for all Portuguese e-procurement platforms to be WCAG 2.0 level A compliant, ANO company established a consortium with the UTAD University in order to improve their platform and develop the required features. By using a specially designed stage-based work methodology, the R&D project was carried out with success and all initial goals were achieved.

In recent years the mobility and navigation of people with visual impairments started to be taken into high consideration, with chances of major increase in the years to come. Most navigation systems fail in terms of accuracy and availability of contextual information that is suitable for blind users, making current commercial systems useless to be used in this kind of scenario. The main goal of the SmartVision project is to fill this gap, providing accurate and contextually rich information about the environment around the user’s current location, simplifying the navigation and increasing the overall accuracy of the system, while preventing the user from dangerous locations. The technology is currently available and the prototype follows a modular structure, already developed. This paper presents a way for integrating all the available modules, in order to create a fully usable prototype for the SmartVision project.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to present an emerging observatory for scientific publications related to the field of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Some repositories are studied and compared in their generic composition, matching features to achieve a general perspective on the current paradigm in the bibliographic metadata handling. The multidisciplinary nature of CSCW field is also represented, giving an overview of research domains. At the implementation level, collaboration requirements are structured to provide ...

Virtual communities and their benefits have been widely exploited to support patients, caregivers, families, and healthcare providers. The complexity of the social organization evolved the concept of virtual community to social networks, exploring the establishment of ties and relations between people. These technological platforms provide a way to keep up with one's connections network, through a set of communication and interaction tools. Games, as social interactive technologies, have great potential, ensuring a supportive community and thereby reducing social isolation. Serious social health games bring forward several research challenges. This article examines the potential benefits of the triad "health-serious games-social networks" and discusses some research challenges and opportunities of the liaison of serious health games and social networks.

ABSTRACT Touchscreens allow interaction with icons and buttons for executing applications or selecting information. This can be used for non-verbal communication, enabling the deaf to communicate without the need for sign language translation and with a richer context than just using text. This paper explores the development process of iconographic driven applications for nonverbal communication following a user centered design approach. MyCarMobile, a mobile application intended to facilitate the communication of the deaf with roadside assistance services, is introduced as a case study. The application follows the iconographic driven interaction model allowing users to describe an occurrence, through the interaction with icons and buttons in a touchscreen device. Based on the implementation of the case study application and previous work a set of guidelines for implementing iconographic driven applications is proposed.

ABSTRACT People with visual impairments face serious challenges while moving from one place to another. This is a difficult challenge that involves obstacle avoidance, staying on street walks, finding doors, knowing the current location and keeping on track through the desired course, until the destination is reached. While assistive technology has contributed to the improvement of the quality of life of people with disabilities, people with visual impairment still face enormous limitations in terms of their mobility. There is still an enormous lack of availability of information that can be used to assist them, as well as a lack of sufficient precision in terms of the estimation of the user’s location. This paper proposes an infrastructure to assist the estimation of the user’s location with high precision using Radio Frequency Identification, providing seamless availability of location based services for the blind, whether indoor or outdoor.

Abstract This paper presents two contributions:(i) a system architecture capable of staging platform-independent choreographies within different virtual worlds, and (ii) an ontology-based solution for capturing and representing multi-user choreographies with reduced time/effort. We argue that choreographies for virtual worlds should be clearly separated from the technical characteristics of their execution in virtual world technological platforms. Due to the heterogeneity of the various virtual worlds and their domain requirements, we propose ...

ABSTRACT This paper presents an on-going work around accessibility issues within the use of social media. With a lack of background in this field, the purpose of the study was to analyze the accessibility levels of different social media websites and aggregators. Based on W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, we have selected three automatic evaluation tools in order to realize a first set of preliminary tests. We verified that none of the websites clearly passed in the evaluation process and our sample didn't meet the adopted accessibility guidelines. The errors occurrence within the social media aggregators' tests was less than in the social media websites. Therefore, it seems to be indisputable to propose a tool that allows users to manage their own social media websites accounts in a more accessible way. Thus, this study presents a list of defined requirements to implement an accessible social media aggregator solution.

ABSTRACT The task of moving from one place to another is a difficult challenge that involves obstacle avoidance, staying on street walks, finding doors, know- ing the current location and keeping on track through the desired path. Nowa- days, navigation systems are widely used to find the correct path, or the quick- est, between two places. While assistive technology has contributed to the im- provement of the quality of life of people with disabilities, people with visual impairment still face enormous limitations in terms of their mobility. In recent years, several approaches have been made to create systems that allow seamless tracking and navigation both in indoor and outdoor environments. However there is still an enormous lack of availability of information that can be used to assist the navigation of users with visual impairments as well as a lack of suffi- cient precision in terms of the estimation of the user’s location. Blavigator is a navigation system designed to help users with visual impairments. In a known location, the use of object recognition algorithms can provide contextual feed- back to the user and even serve as a validator to the positioning module and ge- ographic information system of a navigation system for the visually impaired. This paper proposes a method where the use of computer vision algorithms val- idate the outputs of the positioning system of the Blavigator prototype.

Portuguese Universities have been target of a development of Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) networks, mainly caused by the Electronic University (eU) national initiative, with the purpose of spreading the Internet access through Universities. University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) is a Portuguese University that agreed to the eU initiative, giving Internet access to its students, teachers and other employees. Given the great number of users of this network and the traffic volume of data involved, as well as the considerable ...
